A note from Dr. Neil Paterson

To all those associated with Oak Bay Optometry and Acorn Optometry. The patients, friends, employees and their families.

On Sunday March 18th some time after 5 pm, the watermain at Oak Bay Optometry ruptured right where it enters the clinic. On Monday March 19th I arrived to a catastrophic flood.

The entire clinic had 2 or 3 centimeters of water on the floor.

Remediation will take 6 to 12 weeks. We have to remove all the contents and allow it to dry. This means cutting out the drywall to one foot off the floor and drying out the insulation to prevent mold.

A stressful time for all involved.

No sleep was had Monday night as I waited to hear from our insurance company. On Tuesday, to our great relief, we heard from Sea First, our local insurer. We are insured.

Our plan in the short term is to run as many patients as we can through Acorn Optometry, our sister clinic. Acorn Optometry is located in Athlone Court on Hampshire Road, across from Bon Sushi. I think of it as the little Acorn that fell from the big Oak. Love practising there.

While we will make great efforts to continue to see urgent and emergent cases quickly, Oak Bay Optometry has four examination rooms, Acorn Optometry only has one. The wait time for primary care will inevitably be longer.

We thank you in advance for your understanding and patience.

So many people have stepped up to help us in extraordinary ways. Thanks Vanessa and Laurel and our entire accounting team. Thanks Brian and Derek our tech guys getting us up and running out of Acorn Optometry so seamlessly. Thanks Sea First insurance you’ve had our back in a huge crisis.

Thanks to our staff, you are the best people. This is a difficult time and you are once again showing grace under pressure.

Very Best Regards,

Neil Paterson
